WHERE IS MY HOPE?
PSALM 39:7
PSALM 39:7 NKJ
7 "And now, Lord, what do I wait for?
My hope is in You.
The word hope can mean two different things. Many, when they use the word hope, mean a wish. I sure hope so indicates I wish it could be this way.
But when we look at hope from a biblical perspective, we arrive at a very different meaning. Biblical hope indicates an expectation. A positive favorable expectation. Expecting and wishing are far from the same thing. So now we are going back to the Psalmist David. He asks Lord, what do I wait for? What or where is my expectation coming from? Then He declares where his expectation rests, in God.
David was an individual who had to depend on God. From being overlooked by his family to having to run for his life, David had to depend on God. There was no one else to help him. No one was coming to his rescue. So David's question could have easily been rhetorical.
He knew that there was no help in his life but God. We see David live out this expectation throughout his life. His hope in God was strong. Even when he had made mistakes, David maintained a strong hope in God. He expected God's help and protection and favor, and God came through for David time after time.
APPLICATION:
This would be another phrase to adopt into our own lives. Something we can express to the Lord, Lord my hope, my expectation is in You, not people or government. Not in companies or man's institutions. Nothing inherently wrong here, but that's not where my trust and expectation rests.
Looking ahead a few hundred years. What will have endured these last days? When all is said and done, our future and eternity are in God. His kingdom will be the only one standing in the end. Then it will be perfectly clear. But until that day, I'll join my voice with David and declare Lord my hope is in You!
PRAYER:
Lord, I am not waiting for man to bail me out; my hope is in You. I am not trusting in government or man's plans; my hope is in You. I am not trusting in my own ability to make things happen; my hope, my expectation, is in You! And that's a sure thing!
