THERE IS A BUSINESS SIDE TO MINISTRY

ACTS 6:2-4 NKJ
2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

There are many reasons the early church functioned so powerfully.

The twelve apostles understood their primary role was spiritual. They were to focus on prayer and preaching, and teaching God's word. But with their first organizational structure, they were pulled into the food distribution ministry. Of course, distributing food was important, but so was distributing spiritual food.

So, the apostles made what was most likely a Spirit-led change in their organization. They called for seven men to head up the business side of food distribution while freeing them to pursue more prayer and ministry of the word. And it worked well. In verse seven, we see that God's word spread, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly.

APPLICATION

There is a business or organizational side to ministry, and it is very important. We see the apostles did not just ask for seven businessmen, but rather seven men full of wisdom, full of the Holy Spirit, and men with a good reputation.

The Lord needs all kinds of people to make His church effective. Just because you may not preach, teach or sing does not mean you are a second-tier spiritual citizen. Jesus needs people willing to use their gifts and their spiritual maturity to make a difference.

Yes, there is a business side to ministry, but it still requires spiritually strong men and women.

PRAYER

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for the gifts you have given me. Help me use them to make a difference for Your Kingdom.
