THE CHURCH GETS SOME STRUCTURE
ACTS 6:1-4
ACTS 6:1-4 NKJ
1 Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. 2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, "It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; 4 but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word."
OBSERVATION:
It is too easy to overlook the fact that the early church was working things out as they went along. There was no church model or established system for them to follow. Everything was new.
So, as the people multiplied, the first church problem raised its head. There was a food distribution ministry that was taking place on a daily basis. The church was taking care of the widows, seeing that there was no social plan established by the government. And evidently, the non-Jewish widows were being left out.
How the apostles responded was with a great idea. Most likely a God idea. They asked for men who were full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom that they could place in charge of this business. That would allow the apostles to spend the bulk of their time in prayer and in preaching and teaching God's word.
After the church put this structure into place, it produced some great results. God's word spread, and the number of people following the Lord Jesus multiplied greatly.
APPLICATION:
People have argued for years about the correct form of church structure and government. I don't think anyone can make an iron-clad case for any particular way.
However, a church is an organization, and structure is necessary for it to operate smoothly. There is and always will be a business side to churches. Just because it is business does not mean it's not important. There are so many areas of The Ark that are handled by Phillip Moore and many qualified people. The accounting side, physical logistics, technical, media, administrative, maintenance, IT, hospitality, hospital visits, and that's not the entire list.
The important thing is for those gifted in the business side to handle that area. And those who teach and preach to handle their assignment. A strong church will be strong in both areas. Structure is good.
So, as you pray for your church, ask God to bring the right people to be over the business. And ask for wisdom and revelation for all those who are preaching and teaching. The end goal is that we glorify God and see followers of Christ multiply.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, grant us those who can help with the business as well as those who preach and teach Your word.
