MIGHTIER THAN THE WAVES
PSALM 93:4 NKJ
4 The Lord on high is mightier
Than the noise of many waters,
Than the mighty waves of the sea.
OBSERVATION:
I really do like the visual image of this verse. Maybe because I have always been fascinated by big waves.
I used to body surf in the Atlantic when I was growing up. The waves were not too big, and it was fun. Until. Until the night I went body surfing down in Florida. A storm was coming, and the waves were coming in above my head. I caught a wave and had a great ride until it slammed me into the shore. I was surprised by the wave's power. This was the beginning of the end of my body surfing days.
But I have enjoyed watching documentaries of the surfers who get towed into waves that can reach as high as 90 feet. The size and power of those waves is astounding. And the surfers who ride those waves have a great respect for the waves' power.
In our Psalm for today, the psalmist declares that God is mightier, stronger than the waves of the sea. We mentally subscribe to the idea that God is powerful, but this visual makes His power even more tangible.
APPLICATION:
Too often, we have acted as if our God was small and ineffective. We say God is all-powerful, so we need to act as if we believe that.
God is more powerful than waves of the sea. He is stronger than earthquakes and hurricanes. Tornadoes do not scare our God; he is much stronger. The spiritual is a stronger realm than the natural realm we inhabit. Acts of nature in no way eclipse the One who created all nature.
This attributing power to God is a common practice in scripture. Prayers often start by acknowledging that God is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. We can add the creation of the universe with its galaxies and its overwhelming span. What kind of power does He have that He was able to create all we see and know. He is a mighty, mighty God.
PRAYER:
Dear Father, You are the Creator of all things, and nothing is too big for You. Help me to see more and more of how powerful You are.
