IT IS WRITTEN
LUKE 4:1-4 NKJV
1 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.
3 And the devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."
4 But Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.'"
Jesus was undergoing temptation from Satan. And He had an answer for everything that came his way. It is written.
Jesus had just finished a forty-day fast. Fasting is where you would refrain from food or entertainment, or sugar, something that appeals to your flesh. In Jesus' case, it was food for forty days. Please don't try this at home.
When Satan came to Him to tempt Him, these were valid temptations. The first temptation was to prove He was the Son of God by turning stones into bread. Having not eaten for 40 days, that was a bonafide temptation.
But Jesus answered the devil with scripture. It is written. Jesus then quoted Deuteronomy 8:3, man does not live by bread alone but by every word of God.
There are three key things packed into this fourth verse. First, Jesus used scripture to answer Satan. He never called on His divine heritage as the sinless Son of God.
Second, Jesus brought to light that there is more than natural physical life. There is a spiritual life that is every bit as important.
And third was the fact that God's word is food to our spiritual nature, just as bread is food to our physical nature.
It is written says a lot.
APPLICATION:
We can utilize the same strategy Jesus used on Satan when temptation comes our way. Jesus gave us the pattern, and we have His word. It is written will work for us.
Also, we are wise to pay attention to our spiritual side. We are more than a body and a mind. We are a spirit being; we have a soul, mind, will, and emotions, and we live in a body.
And finally, we need to nourish our spirits with God's word. We need spiritual food in the same way we need physical food.
It is written was powerful over 2000 years ago, and it is still powerful today.
PRAYER:
Thank You, Lord, for your example. Thank You for Your word. It still feeds me today. Your word is spiritual food.
