HEART MOUTH CONNECTION

PROVERBS 23:15-16

PROVERBS 23:15-16 NKJ
15 My son, if your heart is wise,
My heart will rejoice—indeed, I myself;
16 Yes, my inmost being will rejoice
When your lips speak right things.

OBSERVATION:

In this Proverb 23, the word heart is used nine times.

When the scriptures speak of the heart, they are not speaking of the blood pump but rather the core of our being. Heart most often refers to the inners man.

In the two verses for today, we get the perspective of a parent speaking to a child. An older child.

There is a reason for a parent to rejoice if their children are wise of heart. And one of the keyways to tell what is in the heart is by what comes out of the mouth.

Jesus would later say that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. (Matthew 12:34) In other words, what is in us in abundance will come out of us.

In our Proverbs for today, we know that this child is wise in their heart because their lips speak right things.

A wise heart will reveal itself with right words. Conversely, a foolish heart or a deceitful heart will also be revealed by words. There is a strong connection between the heart and the mouth.

APPLICATION:

If you want to get to know someone, you spend time with them. You watch what they do and listen to what they say.

A good way to quickly learn about a person is to watch and listen to them when they are under pressure. Pressure has a way of revealing what's in the heart. It's hard to fake it when the heat is on.

Side note: If you are thinking of marrying someone, you want to ensure you are around them in different situations, real-life situations. There you can see how they act and what comes out of their mouth. You are looking for a good, wise heart.

If you are not too happy with what constantly comes out of your mouth, you can change it. To change output, alter your input. More of God's word in will have a cleansing effect on what comes out. (see Psalm 119:9

PRAYER:

Dear Father, may the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you. May I develop a wise heart and wise lips that cause You to rejoice.
